  1. What is a trigger point?

    A trigger point is a section of muscle which has shortened or tightened due to overactivity. This means the muscle is unable to contract, and therefore strength is reduced. A trigger point presents as a palpable lump in the muscle (a knot).

  2. What is referred pain?

    Referred pain is pain felt in a different part of the body from the site of injury. Eg 1 - muscle tightness at the back of the neck causing headaches. Eg 2 - sciatica is pain that is felt in the leg due to an injury in the back.)

  3. Why do my muscles get tight?

    There a many reasons why muscles get tight or sore. The most common are : poor posture, overactivity and stress.

  4. What do I do for muscle strains and injuries?

    The most common form of actue managment for muscle strains and ligament sprains is R.I.C.E: REST - avoid aggravating factors (eg sport); ICE - apply for 20 minutes every two hours; COMPRESSION - apply firm elastic bandage; ELEVATION - lie down and raise the injured area to above chest height.

  5. Can protein help with fat loss - I thought it was only for building muscle?

    This is a complicated question, however the simple answer is yes! Fat can be reduced by increasing, or supporting, metabolic rate - which can be achieved with protein supplements.

  6. When can I start exercising after pregnancy?

    Assuming that there are no complications, you can begin gentle exercises the day after birth, such as pelvic floor, gentle pilates and physio ball.

  8. Why do I get headaches when I'm stressed?

    Increased tension in the upper shoulders and neck due to stress creates tightness within the trigger points of the muscles (knots). These trigger points can refer pain along their nerve endings to headache areas ie: the base of the skull, the temples and the forehead.

  9. Why do I get knee pain when I'm running?

    The most common cause of knee pain when running comes from pronation: the foot rolling inwards when it makes contact with the ground. This causes excessive angular stress on the knee. Arch support, in the form of correct footwear or orthodics, can help to combat this problem.

    The most common cause of lower back pain at work is due to poor posture (eg slouching over a desk). The easiest way of relieving pain is to sit up straight and ustilise lumbar support. This can be achieved with the use of an ergonomic chair, a lumbar roll or by strengthing the core muscles.

    The most common cause of neck pain while sleeping is due to poor postural support of the spine. An effective remedy is to obtain a well-supported pillow and ensure you have a firm mattress (the level of firmness will vary for very individual).
